Psalm 1

Psalm 1 (Berean Standard Bible) – Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, or set foot on the path of sinners, or sit in the seat of mockers. But his delight is in the Law of the Lord, and on His law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water, yielding its fruit in season, whose leaf does not wither, and who prospers in all he does. Not so the wicked! For they are like chaff driven off by the wind. Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous. For the Lord guards the path of the righteous but the way of the wicked will perish.

One day, I was leaving from work. As I was pulling out of my parking space, I did not turn good enough to exit the parking lot. I had to back up to have room to exit. As I began to back up, I looked up because I was close to a car, and in front of me on the back of this car was a license plate that said Psalm 1. It was so close to me that I realized it was important to read. I called my husband and told him what I saw. I asked him if he could read Psalm 1 to me. I fully did not grasp what God was trying to say but I knew that it was something important.

As I continue to ask the Lord what He was saying, I sensed that I was hearing don’t follow the world or their ways. My delight is to be in God’s word and that I need to continually read it and listen to it. If I do meditate on His Word day and night, I will be like tree that always has water. I will be refreshed and will bear fruit at the right time. I will prosper in whatever I do.

I have a garden and forget to water it at times. When this happens, the leaves turn yellow and the plants are not healthy. Comparing this to Psalm 1, if I do not delight myself in God’s word, I will not be refreshed, healthy or bear fruit at the right time. Understanding this, meditating on God’s word must be priority in my life. If it is not a priority, I will be like the plants that lack water, are yellow in color or withering, and need nourishment.

Psalm 32: 6-8 (BSB) – Therefore let all the godly pray to You while You may be found. Surely when great waters rise, they will not come near. You are my hiding place. You protect me from trouble; You surround me with songs of deliverance. Selah. I will instruct you and teach you the way you should go; I will give you counsel and watch over you.

God has given us so many promises in Psalm 1. We are blessed if we do not follow the world’s way. We are blessed when our delight is in God’s word day and night. As we meditate on God’s word, we will be like trees that are healthy and refreshed, bearing fruit at the right time. He will instruct, teach, counsel and protect us. We will prosper in all that we do.

God thank you that you see us and know what is going in on our lives. Help us not to get distracted and busy with the cares of this life. Help us to always remember to make meditating on Your word a priority. Thank you that You will reveal Your truth to us. Thank you that You will instruct, counsel and teach us in the way that we should go and in making the right decisions. Thank you for protecting us and guarding our path.
